The weekend started with a fun filled BBQ Cook-off and public weigh in of the fighters participating in the 2011 Battle of the Badges. Cheered on by a crowd of family, friends and event goers these warriors, both male and female, looked anxious, excited, pumped and ready to hit the ropes.

Held, for the second year, at the Moody Gardens Convention Center, this event once again sold out to more than 5000 attendees. The wonderful opening ceremonies set the stage for the rest of the evening and included a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner performed by Natalie Foreman, the daughter of two-time World Heavyweight Boxing Champion George Foreman. Master of Ceremonies, Chad Hays a nationally-known radio personality and stand-up comedian kept the one liners rolling as he introduced each of the lovely ring girls and fighters of the red and blue teams.

Different this year and adding a tremendous amount of flair and color were the ‘grand’ entrances choreographed for each of the fighters. Everything from a motorcycle transport to Mariachi bands and cheerleading squads escorted the fighters to the ring of battle. Not to be outdone, Officer Joe Falcon of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, repelled from the second story ceiling into the boxing ring guarded by armed soldiers in camouflage. The audience loudly echoed their approval, loving the entire show.

Each bout was hard fought and exhausting; made up of three one-minute rounds of intense physical challenge and darn-right fierce fighting. Whether male or female, when the final bell rang out nothing was left; each contestant sparred, bobbed, weaved and threw punches against their opponent with every ounce of strength and stamina they could gather. In the end, when the smoke cleared, the Blue Team walked away with the 2011 win taking 10 of the 15 bouts.

A joint venture between the Galveston Police Department, Galveston Fire & Rescue, and the Galveston County Sherriff’s Office with participants also from the Port of Galveston Police Department and the Galveston Island Beach Patrol; this event brings these first responders together in a challenging physical competition with but a single goal: Make life better for children in need.

Thirty fighters entered the ring to do battle, each came out a hero; raising funds for Galveston Boy’s and Girl’s Club, the Shriner’s Burn Hospital and Galveston County Kids and Cops.

Listen in to Talk of the Bay as we get mid-tournament reactions from event goers Matt Sweatt, Del Papa Distributing, Alberta Napoles, H Town Bail Bonds and professional boxer Lou Savarese and as we wrap up this year’s event with Event Director, Lt. Jorge Trevino; Officer Lewis Jackson, Galveston Police Department and Engineer Jim Williams, Galveston Fire & Rescue.

Editor’s Note: Wiredin.cc would like to extend congratulations to all of the participants and organizers. You all really are… Hometown heroes fighting for a cause!
